Charting Shakespearean Waters: Text and Theatre contains 11 wide-ranging essays on different plays and demonstrate a lively interest in Shakespeare: Shakespeare as text and Shakespeare as theatre – Shakespeare in his age, and Shakespeare through the ages.
The papers are dealing with contemporary contexts (Pericles and navigation; A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Elizabethan household theatre);tradition, genre and a dialogic approach to Troilus and Cressida; language and style in Henry the Fourth, Part One, and in the Sonnets; performance (past and present productions of Hamlet and Macbeth); translation (As You Like It) and modern appropriation (The Tempest).
The papers are written by members of the Department of English at the University of Copenhagen and other Danish universities plus international Shakespeare scholars such as Robert Weimann, Professor Emeritus in Drama at the University of California, Irvine and former President of the German Shakespeare Gesellschaft, Professor Peter Holland, former Director of the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Dr. Paul Edmondson, Director of Education at the Shakespeare Centre.
Niels Bugge Hansen is lecturer at the Department of English, University of Copenhagen.
Søs Haugaard is external lecturer at the Department of English, University of Copenhagen.
