Should the circumstances and tendencies of the current state of the world be allowed to affect architecture? That is a fundamental and frequently recurring question as regards the demands placed on architecture. Not only the form, but also the structure, organization, appearance and appeal of buildings are governed by permanent criteria. Based on the assumption that people’s spatial requirements and design aspects resulting from construction requirements are of a stable nature, the answer to the question above is no. Instead, architecture is subject to a constant process of evaluation and assessment according to fundamental architectural principles, which are subsequently interpreted and shaped individually for each new project. This book presents selected buildings by Petra and Paul Kahlfeldt. A common feature of all of their projects is that, regardless of their purpose and their type of function, they all adhere to the same principles. Therefore the buildings are not presented chronologically and individually, but in thematic sequences. This enables the clear identification of principles, relationships, connections and similarities. Furthermore, it brings architecture to the fore as a cultural form of building.
