Den Arnamagnæanske Kommission
The Amamagnæan Commission began in 1958 the publication of a series of critical editions of texts based on the manuscripts, Editiones Amamagnæanæ. The works are divided according to size between Series A in larger, and Series B in smaller format. Trójumanna saga. The Dares Phrygius Version, edited by Jonna Louis-Jensen, is now issued as the ninth volume of Series A.
The version of Trójumanna saga edited in the present volume has never before been published in its entirety. A citicl edition of Tms was published in 1963 (Editiones Arnamagnæanæ Series A, vol. 8) on the basis of texts found in two medieval vellum MSS, AM 573 4to (S) and Hauksbók (Hb), and in paper transcripts of a third vellum, Orms bók Snorrasonar (O), which is now lost. The edition further included two vellum fragments, AM 598 4to II α and β. The sources of the version published in Tms1963 are first and foremost Dares Phrygius' De excidio Troiae and the so-called Latin Homer (Ilias Latina). Shorter passages are derived from other sources, notably Vergil's Aeneid and Ovid's Heroides and Metamorphoses.
At that time the editor was unaware that another, genetically earlier version of Tms was preserved in late transcripts. Shortly after the publication of Tms1963, however, it became clear that three Icelandie paper MSS from the 17th and 18th centuries, which had previously been thought to contain a post-medieval translation of the Troy story from Danish, in fact contained the same translation of Dares Phrygius' History of the Trojan war as forms part of Tms1963. The main difference between the two versions is that while in Tms1963 more than half of the text is derived from sources other than Dares Phrygius, the three paper MSS, AM 176a fol., AM 176b fol. and ÍB 184 4to, contain relatively few additions to the Dares text proper; of particular significance is the absence af the passages from the Ilias Latina which form a substantial part of the longer version.
